July 13th was a very sad day for the flock. After a fun day outside with the chicks, I forgot to close the door to the garage. I left the house in a rush and the door was open all night long. Zella, being a very capable flier and a naturally curious bird finally made her escape of the brooder to wander the garage unattended. Her adventure was quickly ended by the entry of raccoons. Zella was made a meal for the trespassing predators that night. When I came back home the next morning I found the dog food in a mess on the floor, the feathers from my beloved Zella, and six utterly oblivious chicks. I would like to think that through her escape Zella saved the rest of the flock by distracting the raccoons.
Zella was a wonderful chicken. She was adorable and sweet from day one, always willing to be held and quick to fall asleep in your hands.
Zella's quirky character made her fun to watch.
The growth of Zella's wacky hairdo was ever an excitement. We watched it bloom from a little puff to the small spurts of adult feathers.
Zella was always one to appreciate a nap in the sun.
Zella was such a photogenic chick - she didn't shy from the camera and would stop to pose instead of hurrying about her business.
Zella often gave a single squinty eye to the camera as if she was falling asleep but trying not to.
Even when everyone else went through moody skittish stages Zella was content in the loving hands of her people.
Zella, though more independent than many flock members, was nobody's rival and pecked on nobody in particular.
Zella was a beautiful bird inside and out and her presence will be missed.
